Who are the independent witnesses that cosign humancollab's log, and what do they prove?
Witnesses are servers run by other people and organizations that check every new head of humancollab's public log. A witness cosigns a head only if it is consistent with the last head it saw, so if humancollab showed one history to some readers and a different one to others, it would be noticed. humancollab does not run or pay any of them; they use the open C2SP tlog-witness protocol and publish their own keys.
How
- The current witnesses are: witness1.smartit.nu/witness1, remora.n621.de, markovianprotocol.com/witness, rgdd.se/poc-witness, transparency.dev/DEV:witness-little-garden, staging.witness.transparency.goog/ring-any-bells, witness.stagemole.eu, witness.navigli.sunlight.geomys.org. Their keys are listed at https://humancollab.si/api/v1/log under "witnesses".
- The signed head at https://humancollab.si/api/v1/log/checkpoint carries their cosignature lines; check each one against that witness's own key with node examples/verify-witnesses.mjs from github.com/furkanYanteri1/humancollab-protocol.
- The witnesses follow the public log lists of the witness network (witness-network.org); humancollab's log is on its testing list, which anyone can read.
Limits
- A cosignature shows the witness saw this head and that it extends the previous one; it does not show that any entry in the log is true.
- humancollab's log is on the testing list, not a production list, and a witness can stop at any time; that is why there are several.
